5 Top Home Based Business Productivity Tips

 - by Denise Zangoglia

Working from home is both exciting and challenging. The exciting part comes with the freedom to make your own schedule, the flexibility and finally creating a work space that reflects your style and yet retains the right atmosphere for working efficiently.

There is a "dark side" that is such a common occurrence here are some tips to help you navigate some pitfalls that leave us with the question at the end of the day of "Where did the time go?"

* Remember, even though you are at home, home is now also your business place. You need to have a business plan, schedules, timetables, goals and deadlines. You are in charge. More casual does not mean less professional.

* Don't let yourself get out of touch. You may be happy to leave behind the negative aspects of traditional office interactions--gossip, distractions, chatterers. But there are a lot of personal and professional advantages to maintaining a good network of contacts. Get out to some volunteer activities; join a gym; get back in touch with old friends and keep up with your current ones. These breaks can actually make you more productive, since you'll be refreshed and even pick up some new information and ideas.

* Beware of stress. Monitor yourself. If you haven't got a handle on a workable schedule and time management system, it's way too easy to find yourself working more hours than ever before--more than is good for either your or your business. You need to take regular breaks and have some go-to stress relief routines. Are you a runner or walker? Be sure you do it--those exercises are real brain boosters! And when you're done working, be done. Turn off the computer and the desk lamp and "go home" mentally.

It will be much easier to leave your office mentally when you know you have worked productively and have taken practical steps to protect that work. If you don't have a data backup plan already, please get one! Spare yourself the awful experience of losing your crucial records and work by establishing from the outset a data backup system at home and/or through a remote storage and recovery service.

* Go to work. Literally. Make it clear to yourself and to those around you when you are there. Your work time and space need to be respected or both will be eaten away by unproductive distractions.

* Take it seriously. This new opportunity is not going to achieve its potential as a business or as lifestyle if you don't take it just as seriously and professionally as you would any job outside the home. So make sure your office is well-designed, functional, organized, and comfortable. Your inner discipline and frame of mind is the absolute key. If you need to put on more businesslike clothes to reinforce that you are working, well do that. (You probably already have the wardrobe.)

This is a pretty exciting adventure. And it can work wonders for you in terms of renewed energy, work/life balance, and personal independence. But you can't zoom down that road without running into roadblocks unless you take the time and make the effort to create the right environment for productivity and personal satisfaction.
