How to Solve 'Failed' Basic or Dynamic Volume's Status in Windows 7?

 - by Elfin Ruler

Disk Management is a system utility that allows you to manage hard disks and partitions or volumes in a computer system. Windows 7 supports all the existing features, besides providing you several direct menu options for creating simpler partition, extending and shrinking partitions and more. You may encounter some issues when using Disk Management, one of which is discussed further. The basic and dynamic disks appear with their health status in Disk Management. If the disk has gone faulty or is corrupt, this can cause unavoidable situations of restoring from a backup. At times when a good backup is not available or is completely absent, you need to use partition recovery utilities that could recover them.

For example, you might notice that Windows 7 Disk Management doesn't show a basic or dynamic volume with a healthy status. They appear as 'Failed' with no access to stored data.

Cause

The 'Failed' volume status is the general indication of data loss. It shows that the affected basic or dynamic volume is corrupt and cannot be started automatically. It can occur because of these possible reasons:

Disk is physically damagedFile system is corrupted

Solution

The affected volume can be a basic disk, dynamic volume, mirrored volume or a RAID-5 volume. To start the volume, you can try these troubleshooting tips:

Basic Volume

Make sure that the associated physical disk is correctly attached and plugged into the computerIf the disk is attached, ensure that it is turned on

Dynamic Volume

Ensure that the associated disks are onlineTry to return the disks Online of they are notIn case if the dynamic volume remains with 'Failed' status even after returning the disk to Online status, you can try activating the volume manually

Mirrored or RAID-5 Volume

Try to bring disks containing current data OnlineIf this fails, you can try restarting the volume manually

If the problem continues, run chkdsk to repair file system corruption. However, the tool can fail in case of severe corruption. At this point, you should check for backup status and recreate the volume. But if no valid backup is present, you should use partition recovery software first to recover data from a damaged volume. These partition recovery utilities are suitable tools with enriched GUI to allow complete data recovery.

Any of the above methods will not work if the disk is physically damaged. In this case, you should replace the disk and restore from backup or call a data recovery expert to recover the lost data.
