Timex - Telling the Time on Heart Rate Monitors

 - by Martin Roth

With a history dating back to the 1850s, Timex has a heritage that allows it to lay claim to being America's leading watch maker. More recently it has turned to the production of heart rate monitors, and here too it has become one of the industry leaders.

Its monitors may not possess all the high-tech wizardry of the most advanced devices from companies like Polar. However, they are solid and reliable, and they are very reasonably priced. It is little wonder that Timex monitors regularly appear among the top spots in the heart monitor best seller lists.

Of particular note is the company's Ironman range of fitness products. These are segmented into many categories. For example, there is the Ironman Core and the Ironman Sleek lines of sports watches, with many advanced functions for athletes in training.

The Ironman range of heart rate monitors is particularly impressive for the features on offer. One of the most popular of the Ironman series is the Road Trainer monitor.

Consider this list of features: you can set your target heart rate zone, and an alarm warns you when you move above or below the zone. You can also see a display of your average heart rate, for the total workout, for each lap and for the total time that you were in your zone.

The device also measures your recovery heart rate, at the end of your work-out. That is, it tells you how long it takes to get back to a normal heart rhythm.

This monitor also incorporates a calorie calculator, which tells you the total calories you have burned during your training session, thus allowing you to set weight-loss targets.

It also has computer connectivity for your data. In addition, the monitor's transmitter is coded to avoid interference from nearby monitors. This is an important consideration when you are working out in a gym, or outdoors in close proximity to others who might be using a monitor.

Thanks to Timex's long experience in the manufacture of watches, its monitors can boast further features, including excellent illumination for night training, a 100-hour chronograph with lap and split options, and a 100-hour, two-mode countdown timer.

This is an impressive range of applications for a monitor that has a list price of around $110, but which can easily be bought online for under $100.
