Ready, Set, Recover! Bring Back Files As Soon As You Can.

 - by Steve Bellamy

Your missing data must be recovered as soon as possible. For one thing, a speedy recovery is just plain convenient, particularly if the lost files are time sensitive or meaningful. But there's a far more important reason to hurry.

Each time you install new software, browse the internet, move files, or create documents on your PC, the files you need are nearer to becoming written over and annihilated. The same speed must be used for SD memory cards and all flash memory.

To know why, it's vital to learn the basics of how your PC saves and deleted data. When you place a file on your computer, for example, a grad photo, the digital information which makes up the picture is recorded on your hard drive. At the same time, your computer creates filenames, icons, folders, and other ways for you to access that file. So, although the computer may record the grad photo as complicated digital information, you simply see it as gradpic.jpg. The same is true for all file types - -these are all recorded in binary code, and then converted to a form you can use.

That's when your data is saved. But what happens when your file is removed may surprise you.

If system error or accidental deletion removes a file, the file icon would no longer be detectable. This should be quite obvious, as what is the point of removing data if it persisted?

In fact, this is just what happens - the removed data lingers. When you delete a file, you erase the file name and all options to access it. But, the file information is still on your system, unseen on the HD.

Your system entirely skips over the deleted information. Your system pretends that the location with your erased file data as being empty. However, the file data will remain tucked away on your PC's hard drive or your memory card until you save or create new information over top of it. When new file information is placed on your computer, there must be room for it. The new file may overwrite the accidentally deleted file. Once you save over the file with something new, the missing data is permanently destroyed.

With this risk, you must recover your file as soon as you get a chance.

You can't predict when your file will be written over. Next time you install a new program, or record some new information, the danger of your file information being overwritten or corrupted is exacerbated. It could be may be weeks, days, or hours. The earlier you install a reliable data recovery software program and scan for your lost file information, the better your odds of a successful recovery.
