Backup Software: A Critical Need
- by Matthew Kerridge
We've all been there at one point in our lives. Sitting at our computer for several hours, we are just about to finish that term paper when poof, the power goes out and the screen goes dark. Or, we've been editing that lengthy power point presentation for work when our computer suddenly freezes, and we have to reboot. Perhaps we are called away from the photos we are putting into an electronic album, and when we return we find that one of our kids has inadvertently turned off the computer. In all these cases we may get a sinking feeling in our stomach, believing that our work is gone forever, but then we remember that we have been saving our work on a regular basis to our hard drive. Thankfully, once we restart the computer it is easily recoverable.
What happens, however, on those all too frequent occasions when something far worse than a power surge or temporary freeze happens to our computer. Maybe we are tired and not watching ourselves carefully, and we end up reformatting our hard drive when we just want to de-fragment it. It is also possible for our hard drive just to stop working or to become compromised. What can we do then to recover our data? Is there any solution besides costly data recovery services or software?
The potential, permanent loss of our hard drives means that all of us should have backup software installed on our computer systems. In addition to the precautions you take in backing up information on your local hard drive, good backup software makes another copy of your data and programs for storage on CD, online, or elsewhere, effectively protecting it in the case of your computer's system failure. It is a relatively inexpensive yet surefire way to make sure that none of your important files or even the contents of your entire hard drive are ever lost permanently.
Backup software is available for the most common operating systems, including Microsoft Windows and the latest version of MAC OS. All it takes is a little time to install the software on your desktop and/or laptop computer and you will have the peace of mind knowing that your information is safe and accessible. It is no harder to install than other software, so even the most inexperienced computer user can easily make use of backup software.
The best versions of backup software give the end user a choice as to how he or she would like the data backed up. An increasing number of products are offering the possibility of offsite storage that is accessible online, which is ideal for many people. If you are representing a company that has a lot of sensitive information, this possibility may not be feasible for your needs, so backup software also exists that can copy your information onto other hard drives or portable storage formats like CDs for added safety and security.
Whatever your needs, there is backup software that exists for you. With a little research, you too can have serenity that comes with backup software.
