What Are Panic Attacks?

 - by Jenny Hunt

It is undeniable that we live in stressful times. Such stress can cause an overwhelming amount of anxiety, which leads to some suffering from anxiety disorders such as panic attacks. It is not really any surprise that as many as 40 million Americans suffer from a panic attack at some point in their life.

Though panic attacks are usually relatively harmless, they are certainly a very frightening experience. Some people have mistaken panic attacks for more serious ailments, such as heart attacks or asthma attacks. Perhaps most frightening of all, they seem to occur with no telltale signs, leaving the sufferer feeling confused and helpless. Panic attacks do not last long - perhaps 15 to 20 seconds - but they definitely leave the one suffering rattled and out of sorts for an hour or two. Perhaps the most difficult part about panic attacks is that though they are generally known of, what is known about them is actually very little. This leaves people wondering just what exactly a panic attack is and why it is happening to them. Answering these two questions will start you off on your path to recovery.

What is a Panic Attack?

Panic attacks include a wide array of symptoms that vary from individual to individual. There are some strong common symptoms, however, such as:

- Rapid breathing- Feeling of tightness or pain in the chest- Rapid heart rate- Choking sensation- Profuse sweating- Upset stomach/nausea- Dizziness or vertigo- Numbness- Fear of death- Hot flashes- Fear of going crazy

Some professionals have stated that if you have four or more of these symptoms, you are having or will have a panic attack.

The feelings described above leaves one feeling extremely debilitated and confused, so trying to explain how you feel or what is happening to you can be difficult when talking to others. To make things a bit more confusing, women are more prone to panic attacks than men due to women usually having more of the respiratory symptoms of anxiety attacks affect them. One person you should talk to is your doctor or a health care professional. They will be able to rule out that the panic attack is due to a more serious problem, such as a heart attack, asthma, or an array of other illnesses. If you are suffering from a more serious illness, usually the treatments received for those will also put an end to your panic attacks.

How to Treat a Panic Attack?

Once any more serious ailment has been ruled out, you can then get down to treating and managing your panic attacks. Begin with exploring why you may be having these attacks: have you suffered a traumatic event lately? Are you experiencing an overwhelming amount of stress? Where and when are these panic attacks taking place? Jot down your answers to these questions in a notebook and keep for future reference.

Next, you can start with simple breathing exercises. When ever you feel any build up of tension, take a deep, refreshing breath either through your nose, or through pursed lips. Focus on your chest expanding completely. Hold that breath for a few seconds then exhale slowly through your nose or lips. While doing this, be sure to remain positive. Remind yourself that everything will be okay, and that you are not in a dangerous situation. Everything around you is just fine, and you have nothing to be afraid of. This will help your body relax and put a stop to a panic attack before it comes to its peak of intensity.

Remember, there are far more resources and help available to you - whether it is your doctor, counselor, or even information you find in the library or on the internet. The most important thing here is that you seek the treatment you need before your anxiety holds your life captive.
