RAID Controller Failure and Recovery

 - by Fun Anku

RAID Controller is the hardware component that manages all the physical devices and is responsible for presenting them as logical units to the system. Also termed as disk array controller, it provides front-end and back-end interfaces. While front-end interface sets up a communication with system's HBA (Host Adapter), the back-end interface is responsible for setting communication with controlled disks. When a RAID controller fails, you cannot access your logical units and thereby a critical data loss occurs. RAID Data Recovery service is the technical assistance that you can help you salvaging lost data in all such RAID failure scenarios.

RAID controller is basically an interface that allows the communication between hard disks and host computer. It makes different disks to appear as a single entity to the system. In order to read or write data simultaneously to different disks, it uses parallel data paths. This is the reason why data access speed in RAID arrays is calculated up to 35 MB per second. But the failure of RAID controller compels the disk not to allow any data access and perform any operation.

The following list summarizes the typical symptoms of RAID controller failure:

1. Write process stops

2. You get errors, such as:

"Array controller failure[command failure (cmd= <cmd_no>, err=<err_no>)]"

3. Disk couldn't be read with errors like:

"Read ahead buffers timeout"

You cannot access your logical units and data anymore. However, if array is using more than one disk array controllers, the logical units are automatically moved to the healthy controller. Thus, no data loss occurs. But in else situations, data needs to be restored by replacing the damaged disk array controller.

RAID Recovery experts are competent to deal with all such situations when you cannot access data from RAID array drives. They employ advanced recovery techniques to examine a failed RAID array and then follow up a suitable RAID Data Recovery plan. The procedures can be like replacing damaged disk internals, shifting disks, making disk images and more. To prevent entering dust particles, the failed hard drives are opened in Clean Rooms.
