Earby
Earby is a small town and civil parish within the Pendle district of Lancashire, England. It is 5 miles (8.0 km) north of Colne, 7 miles (11.3 km) from Skipton, and 11 miles (17.7 km) from Burnley. The parish of Earby had a population of 4,348 recorded in the 2001 census, [1]
Historically part of the West Riding of Yorkshire, from 1909 to 1974, Earby formed an urban district. Since 1974 Earby has been in the West Craven[2] area of Pendle and now has a Parish Council as part of the West Craven Area Committee on Pendle Borough Council.[3][4]
Other smaller nearby towns include Thornton in Craven and Sough, Lancashire.
Earby also had its own railway station, but it was closed in 1970. The station was a major interchange with the small branch off to Barnoldswick.
Local media
Earby is served by TV from both Leeds and Manchester; ITV (Yorkshire Television) and BBC North are both transmitted from the TV mast at East Marton, 3 miles north of Earby.[5] BBC North West and ITV (Granada Television) are both received directly from the main Winter Hill transmitter.[6] Radio reception is restricted in the town. The BBC has a low-power relay that overlooks Earby and has the four main BBC national FM radio stations (Radio 1 to 4), but there is no local FM radio station in the area.[7] Fresh Radio[8] in Skipton claims to cover the area on MW 1413 kHz.
The local press is published twice weekly; the Barnoldswick and Earby Times[9] is published on Fridays and the Pendle Express is published on Tuesdays. Some of the Yorkshire press is circulated in the area - due to the geographical anomaly. The Craven Herald & Pioneer[10] and Yorkshire Post[11] newspapers are prominent.
