Norton-on-Derwent
Norton-on-Derwent, commonly referred to as 'Norton', is a town and civil parish in the Ryedale district of North Yorkshire, England. Norton borders the market town of Malton, and is divided by the River Derwent. The 2001 census gave the population of the parish as 6,943.
From 1894 to 1974 it was an urban district in the East Riding of Yorkshire.[1]
Education
Norton is served by two main educational institutions: Norton Primary School, and Norton College, which holds specialist Technology College status. Norton College has recently added a newly built sixth form college and a playgroup.
In the nearby village of Langton is the independent preparatory school Woodleigh School.
Sport and Leisure
Norton, along with Malton, is well-known throughout the horse racing industry for the town's many stables.
Malton and Norton Gold Club is a 27 hole golf course located off Welham Road, covered a large part of the south-west end of the town. The club is the 'home club' of European Tour professional Simon Dyson.
Other facilities such as Derwent Swimming Pool and Ryedale Skate Park are located in the town and serve both Norton and Malton.
Economy
Malton Bacon Factory, a large factory, is in fact in Norton as serves as a major employer for the both Norton, Malton and the local area.
Transport
Both Malton railway station and Malton bus station are also located in Norton.
Roads
Due to the town's close proximity to Malton, Norton benefits from excellent access to the A64, which runs from Leeds and York to Scarborough, as well as the A169 to Pickering and Whitby.
Trains
Malton railway station is on the TransPennine Express route, with fast trains every hour running from Scarborough to York, Leeds, Manchester and Liverpool.
There are plans to re-open the rail link between Malton and Pickering, which would create a new service from Malton to Whitby.
Buses
Norton is home to Coastliner (website), a division of the TransDev bus group. Buses run from Leeds and York through Norton and Malton to Pickering/Whitby, Scarborough, and Bridlington. There are also regular buses to Castle Howard and Hovingham, and a number of other local bus routes.
